Monday, 22nd July 2019
A carer who slapped and swore at an elderly woman living with dementia has been handed a suspended prison sentence.
The carer was found guilty of the cruel treatment of 84-year-old woman during her employment at a Care Home in Scunthorpe. The victim, an immobile elderly lady, was left bruised following the incident that occurred after midnight on January 13, 2018.
The court heard how the carer slapped the resident three times on the shoulder while attempting to move her with another carer. She then let go of the victim while helping her to walk causing her to fall and hit a commode with her left side before slapping her across the face and shouting profanities at her.
The incident came to light after it was reported by the other carer accompanying the resident.
The victim's family have been shocked and saddened by the incident but have praised the care home for their investigation into the carer’s actions. The carer was given a 15-month suspended prison sentence, a six-month 7pm to 6am curfew and 10 days’ rehabilitation.
